AZ orgs unite community to take action against police brutality October 22nd
Phoenix Copwatch, Phoenix Anarchist Coalition, and Tucson's Migra-Patrol-Copwatch and Coalición de Derechos Humanos are hosting a day of events in their respective communities to highlight national police abuses and the need for active independent, community-based organizations in our society. Police abuses like the death of Mario Madrigal Jr. at the hands of the Mesa PD, and the case against Louie Arriaga Jr. show the need for community involvement. In recognition of National Day Against Police Brutality, a march and rally, "Know Your Rights" forum, and benefit show will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2005 in Phoenix. In Tucson Migra-Patrol-Copwatch and Coalicion de Derechos Humanos will host an October 22 Festival at the Armory Park Ballroom.
People will converge at Cesar Chavez Memorial - 3rd Ave. and Jefferson St. in downtown Phoenix - to take to the streets and march at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The events at The Armory Park Ballroom, in Tucson, will begin at 2 p.m. and end at 6. Following the march in Phoenix there will be a “Know Your Rights” forum at the Counter-culture Café, 2330 E. McDowell Rd. A benefit show for Phoenix Copwatch and political prisoners Laro Nicol and Richard Williams will then begin at 8 p.m., at the same location. The Armory Park Ballroom in Tucson is located at 220 S. 5th Ave.

COUNTER RECRUITMENT IN THE VALLEY

AZCRC Member Detained for Fliering
An Arizona Counter-Recruitment Coalition (AZCRC) member was detained and charged with trespassing as AZCRC members were
distributing counter-recruitment literature at the
Fiesta Mall in Mesa.
A Phoenix area organization, the AZCRC has been active in building resistance to recruitment,
especially amongst students and young adults, by
opposing military recruitment on high school and
college campuses.
The AZCRC has encountered varied reactions from students, school officials, security, and police. Some high school students work with the AZCRC, while others have already signed up in the armed forces. The AZCRC has been invited by some school officials to bring their literature into career centers, while at other schools, the AZCRC has been told to leave school property while fliering. The incident at Fiesta Mall is the first time an AZCRC member has been detained while doing counter-recruitment fliering.
Thousands of students have received fliers from the high school campus visits that the AZCRC have done all over the Phoenix metro area, during which they've engaged the youth in productive discussion on the alternatives to enlisting in the US military and also the effects of combat and war on veterans after their service has ended. More recently the AZCRC has flyered at South
Mountain High School and Carl
Hayden High School in December, at Agua
Fria High School and at Tempe
High School as well.
The AZCRC has participated in fliering and protesting at recruitment centers, hopes to build draft resistance, plans to put on a workshop at the Local to Global Justice Teach In in March, and will have some involvement in the Anti-Occupation/Counter-Inauguration demonstration on January 20th.

HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUES IN JAILS

Fighting for Maricopa County Inmates' Rights
On
June 24th at 7:30 a.m. several Durango Jail inmates went on a hunger strike
to demand healthier food and three meals a day instead of the two they're
being served currently (CBS
5 report). The hunger strike ended within a few days, but was supported
on the outside by members of the Monsoon
Anarchist Collective, Mothers
Against Arpaio, Phoenix Copwatch
and was also joined by friends and family members who were waiting in the
visiter's center at the jail. This first outside protest occured on the
Saturday following the start of the hunger strike outside of Durango Jail
(see the call,
summary,
and photos).
Protests continue for the human rights of local inmates. The Monsoon Anarchist
Collective called for protests on July
12th and July
19th and made several demands including three healthy meals a day for
inmates, the end to persecution of hunger strikers, the closure of Tent
City due to human rights violations (see Amnesty
International's report), and they also call for a people's review board.
The July 12th protest was held in front of the Wells Fargo Building in
downtown Phoenix where Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office is. Sheriff Joe has been
the center of recent local coverage, highlighting corruption and lies. Protesters
got positive response from passers by and heard from an inmate on work-release
about the poor conditions including vermin, not enough water, poor health,
deaths, having to work for free, and inmates not knowing enough about the
law or their rights.
The July
19th protest will be held at Estrella Jail at 9 am (more details here).
