Three Flagstaff citizens arrested beaten and tortured in jail for shouting "hooray for the lesser of two evils"
On Sunday, August 8, 2004, at the rally held for John Kerry in downtown Flagstaff, three citizens, Rudy Preston, Brent Robinson and Joshua Sweeney, were arrested for exercising their first amendment rights. They have been charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and aggravated assault against a police officer. Rudy has been released to third party custody, Brent was bonded out for $5,000.00, and Josh remains in jail on a $15,000.00 secured bond. There are many who witnessed the arrests and we are now calling for support to PROTECT OUR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS AND END POLICE BRUTALITY.
If you witnessed these arrests or wish to support and uphold our freedom of speech, please make contact with us to see how you can help. Please call (928) 214-8077 or e-mail earthhug@yahoo.com. We need people to donate money or organize fundraisers to aid the legal defense fund. As of this moment, we need $6500.00 to retain a criminal defense lawyer. We will also be pursuing civil litigation for the violation of our first and eighth amendments, police brutality and jail torture. We also need people who witnessed the event to make statements, which will be used in court, about the events witnessed. We also need pictures/film/testimony of the arrests and subsequent chaos and/or pictures/film/testimony regarding the people who were dressed in costumes (i.e., persons with red smiley face mask, green veil and cape, tall green wig, etc.).
If you can help please contact us at (928) 214-8077 or e-mail earthhug@yahoo.com or send a tax deductible donation made out to the Flagstaff Activist Network (write “legal defense” on the memo line) to P.O. Box 911, Flagstaff, AZ, 86002.
In solidarity,
Flagstaff Activist Network
