SOA SOLIDARITY PROTEST

For all those folks that can't make it to Fort Benning we decided to have our own little protest in solidarity. Fort Hauchuca is where they write the torture and terror manuals currently being used in Iraq and other, mostly Latin American, countries. It is copnsidered the "Military Intelligence" center for the whole country. As far as I know this is the first protest in solidarity and hopefully it wont be the last.
About 50 people were there and pretty much every cop from the surrounding area. They pretty much stayed far away and spyed on us with telephoto cameras. There were a few redneck gawkers across the street. And of course there was the occasional honk and the occasional finger.

The Anti-Protest Protest

If I correctly understood comments made by the anti-protest protestors (it was a small group but I support their right to free speech), they made two points:
- Americans should not be doing or saying anything but cheering for the troops, and
- because somebody else uses torture, we should use torture.
These arguments seemed less than compelling, considering that the people at the anti-torture protest were highly supportive of the troops. The unofficial withdrawal of the United States from the Geneva Conventions have put American troops in harms way and any efforts to bring the U.S. into compliance with the Geneva Conventions will directly support the troops.
What I found most disturbing was the attitude that the protestors had to be in favor of torture to be supportive of the U.S. troops. The linkage of U.S. troops to torture, in my opinion, is certainly not supportive of the troops. America is about much higher ideals.

Someone should have told that to Saddam. Also to the terrorists who torture and behead.
