A group of concerned citizens gathered Wednesday, January 26th to protest the opening of Prescott's second Wal-Mart Supercenter. Prescott is one of the smallest towns in the United States to have two Supercenters within the city limits. Carrying signs with legends such as "2 Is Too Many" and "Boycott Wal-Mart," demonstrators braved the rain and temperatures in the low forties to convey their views. The demonstrators stood at the nearest street intersection, about 2000 feet away, to avoid possible violation of private-property laws. Although foot traffic was minimal, and some of those who drove by were less than enthusiastic (one driver shouted "Hippies suck!"), the overwhelming majority of those who responded to the protest were positive, flashing peace signs, thumbs-up, waving and shouting "Right on!" Several pamphlets on Wal-Mart's business practices and the economic effects of Wal-Mart stores on towns were handed out, occaisionally at the risk of being hit by other vehicles. The protesters stayed for about two hours until consensus to disperse was reached.
