Minutemen Most Likely Exaggerators
by s
Monday, Mar. 21, 2005 at 11:26 AM
Chris Simcox, associated with the Minuteman Project has a pattern of exaggerating numbers involved with civilian border patrolling.
I found a two-year-old Salon.com article about Chris Simcox’s group called Civil Homeland Defense, which is a sort of earlier long-term, more localized version of the Minuteman Project. The article says, “While Simcox says his militia has 600 members, others here say the number is far smaller.’ Chris can only get a three-man patrol going,’ says Jeff, a bartender at the Crystal Bar on Main Street. ‘Basically, the kind of people who want to join his group can't even pass a background check.’”
News media this week are mostly reporting as fact that around 1,000 people have registered for the Minuteman Project, what the minutemen people are calling a protest of the lack on the part of the U.S. government to secure the border. Participants are planning on patrolling the border, supposedly in a completely legal manner- only to report illegal immigrants to the proper authorities and to deter immigrants from passing through. The Minuteman Project claim, “we anticipate an attendance of at least 1,000 participants as of March 20, 2005, that number may double or triple by April 1.” Only a few media outlets question the contention that this is an accurate number. The Arizona Daily Star reported, “Organizers Chris Simcox of Tombstone and James Gilchrist of Aliso Viejo, Calif., still decline to turn over any information that would corroborate that 900-plus people have signed on. When asked Friday, Simcox said only 'no comment' and hung up."
Further investigation into the exaggeration of numbers surrounding Chris Simcox’s pet schemes leads to another example from AZStarnet.com:
●In November 2002, Minuteman Project founder Chris Simcox said dozens of people would come out for his much-debated Civil Homeland Defense, the Tombstone-based group that was supposed to patrol the border, gather up illegal entrants, turn them over to the U.S. Border Patrol and show up the federal government for not doing its job.
The group has seized about 150 illegal entrants, a far cry from the 4,000 Simcox contends have been apprehended since he started two years ago, according to Miguel Escobar, Mexican consul in Douglas. The consulate responds to every citizen's encounter.
By contrast, Escobar has tracked at least 65 incidents in which citizens stopped entrants since 1999, when groups and individuals such as Cochise rancher Roger Barnett, American Border Patrol and Ranch Rescue began apprehensions in Cochise County.
● The Border Patrol has had three to five instances in which citizens were standing with a captured group of illegal entrants in the past year, said Tucson Sector spokesman Andy Adame. By contrast, the agency receives 300 to 500 anonymous calls from other civilians each month, he said. The agency has adopted a "wait and see" attitude toward the Minuteman Project.
● A handful of people showed up at the first organizational meeting of the Civil Homeland Defense on Dec. 7, 2002. Fifty were expected.
● On Jan. 1, 2003, two volunteers showed up for the first training session. Four reporters were there to greet them.
These exaggerations mustn’t lead us to believe that there aren’t enough racist, immigrant-hating, xenophobic, U.S. nationalist, defending-us-from-terror patriots in this country to form a militia (or whatever they’re calling it) the size of what the Minuteman Project claims to be. Nor must it lead us to believe that this Minuteman project or the various vigilante groups before, during, and after it aren’t a problem. This is about exposing them for misrepresenting the truth and for making this activity look normal and justified.
This shouldn’t keep people from going out to protest or resist the Minuteman Project and the militant white supremacists they pretend won’t be there. There is a protest planned for April 1st in Tombstone.
Who exaggerates most, MMP or Media?
by Dale Roose

After spending enormous amounts of money with satellite trucks at a remote location and with crews shuttling back and forth to and from Tombstone, at least some of the television media seems to have gone so far as to exaggerate the MMP exaggerations.
Other issues with distortion in the commercial media have also once again become apparent.
KOLD in Tucson showed some video of exhausted protestors just before they left and covered that video with audio from an interview with somebody apparently with the MMP. The coverage lead viewers to believe that the protestors did nothing and had nothing to say but had just gotten off at the wrong bus stop (metaphorically speaking).
Then KOLD brought on ultra-right wing neo-con Republican Senator Jon Kyl to praise the MMP for bringing attention to the issue, as if groups such as Derechos Humanos had never before thought to do that.
It's difficult to say which group--the MMP or corporate media--is most reponsible for the distortions and exaggerations.
All the hoopla must have been humorous for at least some of the residents of Tombstone as they went about business as usual a block away.
Commercial pilot

I am surprised how little support I have seen for the volunteers, that are doing a job that the federal government has failed miserably to do.
The failure on the border has not just been in Arizona, but all the southern states adjoining Mexico.
The cost is in the billions, from hospitals closing because of being required to give free medical,
to school systems that are a horrible mess and are failing all of our children that are being dumbed down to so the illegals can keep up.!
My wife and I left a small farming community in central California that was over four hundred miles from the border. One of many reasons was she would have to go to emergency to get shots for migraines and had to wait hours because illegals were there with, from one to six kids, who may be there only for treatment of a cold because the hospital is required by our laws to treat even illegals free of charge.
It has been said that illegal bring millions into this country but if you search you will find they are costing tax payers billions.
The minutemen, may not have the numbers they wanted on the border but as a commercial pilot, I along with thousands others are behind them a hundred percent. From Main to Florida and Alaska to California thousands of us applaud the courage that is being expressed for volunteering to do a job that has been so miserably batched by our government!
May be this will open this administrations eyes, I only hope it’s not too late!

" One of many reasons was she would have to go to emergency to get shots for migraines and had to wait hours because illegals were there with, from one to six kids, who may be there only for treatment of a cold because the hospital is required by our laws to treat even illegals free of charge."
This is more of the usual biggoted crap I hear from whitebread Californios and others who insist they are not racists. You may know the others in the waiting room were Mexicans, but how did you know they were all illegals? Did you card them all? How do you know they were all being treated free of charge? Did you review their hospital paperwork?
And since when can ANYBODY, legal or otherwise, walk into a hospital ER and get free treatment for a non-emergent condition? I have worked in hospital billing departments, and I can tell you that the idea that anybody can walk into a hospital and get treated is a fiction- they are only obligated to treat if failure to do so would risk loss of life or limb.
Racist Myths
by Ichabod
Tuesday, Apr. 19, 2005 at 1:46 AM
Note how Ronald rationalizes racism. He claims the waiting rooms were full of illegals. He may have known they were Mexican, but how did he know they were unocumented, and how did he know whether they were receiving free care? Obviously, unless he checked their green cards, and checked their admissions paperwork, he did not know these things. But it is more socially acceptable to hate "illegals" than it is to just hate Mexicans, so in his mind, they are ALL illegals, they are all freeloading off the system, etc. Of course, these bullshit stories are circulated amongst the prejudiced, and the more they are repeated, the more they are believed. Thus are urban legends born.
The truth is that hospitals are prevented from refusing service if doing so would risk the life or limb of the patient- the thing about illegals getting free treatment for everything is a myth. If you doubt me, try going to a hospital ER to get free treatment for a cold. Lie and tell them you are undocumented if you want to. Let me know how it works out for you.
