POLICE DETAIN WOMAN AND CHILD AT TUCSON PROTEST
TUCSON, AZ -- 21 MARCH 2005 -- Tucson police arrested a woman and a female child during an apparently peaceful rally on Monday. Protesters, who had gathered at the Tucson Convention Center, where the president spoke on Monday, looked on as several police officers handcuffed the woman and child and marched them across the road to waiting police cars. Nearby Bush supporters, some of them cheering, watched from nearby in the TCC parking lot. Witnesses identified the woman and child as mother and daughter, and reported that neither of them had done anything threatening. At this time, no further information has been released to the public.
The protesters, who voiced opposition to the president's proposed social security privatization plan, the war in Iraq, and other policies, greeted the presidential motorcade with jeers and chants, while Bush supporters filed into the convention center to hear the president speak. Presumably, those allowed to enter were thoroughly vetted beforehand, as is the well-known practice of Bush campaign managers. Demonstrators stayed throughout Bush's speech, and again harangued the motorcade as it quickly departed. The arrest of the woman and child was made during the motorcade's departure.
Following the hasty exit of Bush's entourage, his supporters, many of whom wore stickers reading "Fix Social Security Now!", filed back to their cars in the parking lot, past a throng of shouting protesters. Demonstrators's shouts ranged from "Bush is not a Christian!" to "Shame, shame, shame!" to "Lift the cap on the FICA tax!" Police interposed themselves between protesters and Bush supporters, but not arrests were made, nor altercations reported. The rally then dispersed without incident.
