October 22nd is National Day Against Police Brutality

Phoenix Copwatch and the Phoenix Anarchist Coalition are hosting a day of events to commemorate National Day Against Police Brutality on Saturday, October 22nd. The recent videotaping of white police beating a defenseless 64-year-old African American man in New Orleans has reminded the world that racism and police brutality didn’t end with Rodney King.

The day will start with a march and rally in downtown Phoenix, starting at the Cesar Chavez Memorial at 3:30 pm. The memorial is located at City Hall at the corner of 3rd Ave. and Jefferson. We will hear from speakers whose families’ lives have been affected by police abuse and from community activists who are working to stop police brutality.

At 6 pm we will continue with a Know-Your-Rights Forum at Counter Culture Café, 2330 E. McDowell (just west of 24th St.). A lawyer will instruct us on what to do when stopped by the police and will answer questions about what our rights are during police interactions.

A show to benefit Phoenix Copwatch and political prisoners Laro Nicol and Richard Williams will follow the forum at Counter Culture Café. Bands and performers include Brad B (from Drunken Immortals), Sigma, Seveer Tire Damage, Tuning Room, Swallowing Stones, and more. You can learn more about Copwatch and the political prisoners, then decide where you want your donations to go.
