Arraignment Update from Flagstaff : AZ IMC

Dec. 8 - Sarah Harvey and Bill Rogers were arraigned this morning after their arrest yesterday as part of a nation-wide sting against environmental activists.

Sarah is charged with damaging a U.S. Forest Industry Building in Medford-Jackson County, Oregon. She faces 5-20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
She is being held until an extradition hearing on the 13th, and is facing extradition to Oregon.

Bill is charged with setting fire to a National Wildlife Research Laboratory on June 21, 1998. He is also facing 5-20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He is being held in Flagstaff until a hearing on the 16th, in which he faces extradition to Washington.

While Bill has been active in the Save the Peaks coalition, his arrest is not directly related to Flagstaff police action in high schools yesterday. the Youth of the Peaks will be holding a press conference this afternoon.

Help will be needed to support Sarah, Bill and the Catalyst infoshop. More information will be posted about how individuals and communities can be of support at this critical time.

SEATTLE -- Six people have been arrested in connection with ecoterrorism attacks in Oregon and Washington dating back to 1998, including the destruction of a Bonneville Power Administration tower near Bend, Ore., on the eve of the millennium, federal prosecutors said Thursday.
The arrests were made Wednesday in New York, Virginia, Oregon and Arizona, and each of the defendants has been indicted in Oregon or Washington. Besides the tower's destruction, the attacks included three arsons in Oregon and one in Olympia.
One of the fires caused more than $500,000 in damage, and the other three caused more than $1 million, investigators said. The Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front claimed responsibility for most of the acts.
Chelsea Dawn Gerlach, 28, of Portland, Ore., was charged with conspiring to destroy an energy facility and destruction of an energy facility in the attack on the transmission tower. She faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
Two of the defendants - Stanislas Gregory Meyerhoff, 28, and Daniel Gerard McGowan, 31 - face up to life in prison if convicted of setting fires Jan. 2, 2001, at the Superior Lumber Co. in Glendale, Ore., and May 21, 2001, at the Jefferson Poplar Farm in Clatskanie, Ore. Damage from each fire exceeded $1 million.
Meyerhoff was arrested in Charlottesville, Va., where he was attending Piedmont Community College. McGowan was arrested in New York City.
Kevin M. Tubbs, 36, and William C. Rodgers, 40, face up to 20 years each if convicted of a June 21, 1998, arson at the Animal and Plant and Health Inspection Services facility in Olympia, which caused $1.2 million in damage. Tubbs was arrested in Springfield, Ore., and Rodgers was arrested in Prescott, Ariz.
Sarah Kendall Harvey, a 28-year-old student at Northern Arizona University, was arrested in Flagstaff after being charged with a Dec. 27, 1998, fire at U.S. Forest Industries in Medford, Ore. That fire caused an estimated $500,000 in damage.
The defendants were scheduled to make initial appearances in federal court in the districts where they were arrested.
The U.S. Attorney's office in Seattle said the investigation is continuing.

I am trying to figure out how all this is going down and will be posting things I learn, as I learn them.

I just talked to Kent Robinson of the Or Criminal Division, and he said there will be a hearing at 1:30 pm in Eugene at the Fed Courthouse on Monday, Dec 12 for Chelsea Dawn Gerlach. Please make a showing at this hearing. Kent also said that all of the charges are out of Eugene, Or except for two, coming out of Wa State. He said that those charged with crimes from Oregon who were detained outside of Or, such as NY, will be sent by Marshall to the Oregon area within the next couple of weeks. He said that Tubbs and Rodgers will be sent to Wa State as that is where they are charged out of. I have seen rumors on the internet re some charge re a UW horticulture lab arson, but that seems to just be a rumor, the ONLY charges in this coming out of Wa St are around the Tubbs and Rodgers cases for an alleged action in Oly.

I also talked to the Public Affairs Officer for the US attorney's office in Seattle, Emily Langlie. She said that the two charged from Wa st are in the process of detention hearings right now. She said they can be held for flight risk or risk of public danger. She said that Tubbs had a hearing in Eugene today or yesterday and he will be sent to the US District Court in Tacoma, Wa. for his arraignment hearing shortly, if detained. She said that Rodgers is having a detention hearing in AZ next week, and if he is detained, he will also be sent via a marshall to Tacoma within the next month.

I am planning on going to Eugene to cover many of these hearings as a reporter. I hope as many indy media reporters as possible make this a priority as the accused are already not getting a fair shake in mainstream media before even being arraigned!

I know the ELF/ALF claimed some of the arsons in question, and there is colloquial belief that the people have been charged through suspected connection to ELF/ALF, but now newspapers are publicizing that connection. I was in the Arizona court for arraignments and ELF/ALF were not mentioned . Have the Feds publically made that connection?

Not that I am aware.
