Your pictorial reprt of the Atenco incident is slanted. "The residents of San Salvador Atenco, who have a history of clashing with authorities, attacked the police in response to the arrest of several of their companions at a market in the nearby town of Texcoco" If a naive American reads that same caption what do you suppose he will assume? Any reporter who knows anything about Mexico knows that the government are not the good guys!
In mexico, traditionally, government domination has been both exquisite and brutal. The reason the citizens of San Salvador Atenco were obliged to defend themselves was that the government had coveted their land for an airport and had quite nearly appropriated all of their land for that purpose. The people had united and resisted the consfication of their homes!
The flower farmers had traditionally taken thier flowers to market in Texcoco. The mayor of that town took it upon himself to suspend that tradition.
Later it was the governer of the State of Mexico whom ordered three thousand riot police to descend upon San Salvador Atenco. This was not done to protect the citizens of that town. Its an example of State imposed teorrism. A significant proportion of the police are clearly psychotic as demonstrated by thier conduct during this incident. They were not protecting the people. Just look up an unbiased article on this topic.
The point I'm making is that a reporter should not impose her value jugements on her readers, which is exactly what was done in regard to the captions under these photos. An editorial is another matter, which is what I'm writing at this moment. Anybody whom honestly believes that the paternalistic Mexican government acts in the best interest of the Mexican people has got nothing between their ears but mush.
