You Can't Vote Against a Yuppie Takeover!
by Phoenix Anarchist Coalition Monday, Nov. 06, 2006 at 6:59 PM

Gentrification will not be featured on the ballot tomorrow, but fret not, gentle reader. Phoenix Anarchist Coalition has assembled this handy 11X17 poster-size guide to effective direct action to thwart a yuppie takeover of YOUR neighborhood!

download PDF (368.1 kibibytes)

Feel free to download and post this poster wherever people need to see it, especially at those edges where the ongoing yuppie takeover is facing off against a working class, immigrant, or student neighborhood.
This is an 11"X17" poster saved in PDF format. Adobe Reader opens it well, but unless your printer can print on 11X17 paper, you're going to have to save it to a disk and go to a neighborhood print shop to get it printed up. After that, photocopy it, experimenting with the darkness/lightness. For us, it worked best to photocopy it using the darkest possible setting, but do a sample before you run off a whole bunch, okay?
Here's a recipe for wheatpaste that might come in handy when trying to get these posters to stick in those hard-to-reach but easy-to-read spots:
Contrary to the name, bleached white flour is better to use than wheat flour because it does not discolor your work or leave small brown flecks of wheat all over the top of your poster. Prepare 1 cup of very hot water. Make a thin mixture of 3 tablespoons of white flour and cold water (just enough to wet all the flour and make it liquid enough to pour). Pour the cold mixture slowly into the hot water while stirring constantly. Bring to a boil. When it thickens, allow to cool. For slightly better strength, add 1 tablespoon of sugar after the glue is thickened.
When you go out poster-bombing, wear clothing that you don't mind ruining- wheatpaste is really hard to wash out of clothing, and wheat pasting is messy work! It works really well to put the paste in a plastic one liter bottle with a closeable sports nipple. Now find good flat smooth non-porous surfaces to paste the posters to. (Steel works good.) Open the sports nipple and squeeze some paste directly onto the surface, then use an old brush to brush the paste out to slightly larger than the dimensions of the poster. Then put the poster up on top of the paste, and use your hands to smoothe it out. Finally, apply a layer of paste over the poster, smoothing it from the center of the poster all the way past the edges. (Applying a layer of paste around the edges of a flyer or poster will go a long way to keep it from getting ripped or torn. Brushing a thin layer of wheatpaste over the top of your poster will weatherproof it a bit and stiffen your paper once dry.)
After using a portion, reheat the remaining paste in a covered jar or container to sterilize it for storage or keep refrigerated. If wheat flour is not available, other flours will work.
Other than that, have fun, be safe, don't get arrested or shot or anything, maybe take some photos of good poster placement in your neighborhood and post them to Indymedia.
Spread the word,
Phoenix Anarchist Coalition.
