You Can't Vote Against a Yuppie Takeover!
by Phoenix Anarchist Coalition
Monday, Nov. 06, 2006 at 6:59 PM
Gentrification will not be featured on the ballot tomorrow, but fret not, gentle reader. Phoenix Anarchist Coalition has assembled this handy 11X17 poster-size guide to effective direct action to thwart a yuppie takeover of YOUR neighborhood!
download PDF (368.1 kibibytes)
Feel free to download and post this poster wherever people need to see it, especially at those edges where the ongoing yuppie takeover is facing off against a working class, immigrant, or student neighborhood.
This is an 11"X17" poster saved in PDF format. Adobe Reader opens it well, but unless your printer can print on 11X17 paper, you're going to have to save it to a disk and go to a neighborhood print shop to get it printed up. After that, photocopy it, experimenting with the darkness/lightness. For us, it worked best to photocopy it using the darkest possible setting, but do a sample before you run off a whole bunch, okay?
Here's a recipe for wheatpaste that might come in handy when trying to get these posters to stick in those hard-to-reach but easy-to-read spots:
Contrary to the name, bleached white flour is better to use than wheat flour because it does not discolor your work or leave small brown flecks of wheat all over the top of your poster. Prepare 1 cup of very hot water. Make a thin mixture of 3 tablespoons of white flour and cold water (just enough to wet all the flour and make it liquid enough to pour). Pour the cold mixture slowly into the hot water while stirring constantly. Bring to a boil. When it thickens, allow to cool. For slightly better strength, add 1 tablespoon of sugar after the glue is thickened.
When you go out poster-bombing, wear clothing that you don't mind ruining- wheatpaste is really hard to wash out of clothing, and wheat pasting is messy work! It works really well to put the paste in a plastic one liter bottle with a closeable sports nipple. Now find good flat smooth non-porous surfaces to paste the posters to. (Steel works good.) Open the sports nipple and squeeze some paste directly onto the surface, then use an old brush to brush the paste out to slightly larger than the dimensions of the poster. Then put the poster up on top of the paste, and use your hands to smoothe it out. Finally, apply a layer of paste over the poster, smoothing it from the center of the poster all the way past the edges. (Applying a layer of paste around the edges of a flyer or poster will go a long way to keep it from getting ripped or torn. Brushing a thin layer of wheatpaste over the top of your poster will weatherproof it a bit and stiffen your paper once dry.)
After using a portion, reheat the remaining paste in a covered jar or container to sterilize it for storage or keep refrigerated. If wheat flour is not available, other flours will work.
Other than that, have fun, be safe, don't get arrested or shot or anything, maybe take some photos of good poster placement in your neighborhood and post them to Indymedia.
Spread the word,
Phoenix Anarchist Coalition.

Wordy and anti-social

Poster is too wordy. Why is it that anarachists can't just come to the point without lecture-izing? No one is going to read all this philoso-babble.
Also, you claim to want to do things that foster community-building, and that's great. However, even working class folks like myself won't want YOU around if you start littering and vandalizing my neighborhood.
Can't you anarchists ever get over antagonizing and picking fights as your first line of 'changing minds'? It aint gonna work, gang.

I agree with the above poster -- reading what your major plans are...who'd want you in the neighborhood, either.
Plus, there's way too few anarchists to have any real impact against the forces of gentrification. What have you successfully done in the past to slow down the process? Whether you like it or not, people in elected office have a major say in these issues, and if you can't figure out a way to actively engage and deal wth that, you're doomed. Which you probably are...are there more or fewer PAC members than a year ago? Two years? Three? You're being gentrified, too.

"graffitti - litter -- vandalism -- squatting." THIS is part of your plan to ally with folks in working class neighborhoods!?! Not only will it guarantee the authorities going medieval on your asses, but you won't get a shred of sympathy from your working-class neighbors, either
not by anarchists for anarchists

i don't understand this to be a plan set out for anarchists to follow. it's suggestions for people who don't want yuppies living in their neighborhoods, and if it happens on a wide enough scale, it could work.
working with politicians would help? give me a break. they all want to make money and "improve" their cities. not let lower class people continue to live there. something needs to be done, and i think this is a good step in the right direction.
Makes Yuppies call in more cops

Advocating vandalizing and littering one's neighborhood is just plain counter productive and downright stupid. Not only will it NOT 'get rid of yuppies' but it will increase their tendencies to call in the cops. Again, I repeat: stupid.

YOU CAN’T VOTE AGAINST A YUPPIE TAKEOVER
While working people usually see a house as a place to live, a necessity,
real estate speculators see land as a source of profit buy low, run up the price, sell high.
It’s no accident when working class folks and students get run out of their neighborhood by rising rents,
evictions, demolitions, and heavy-handed cops. Predatory real-tors, conniving developers,
and their buddies in the government engineer things so they can make money by selling the neighborhood off to yuppies.
Yuppies don’t want to live in your neighborhood- they want to live in THEIR neigh-borhood,
where your neighborhood USED TO BE.
You won’t get a chance to vote on how you feel about it at the polls, though.
A politician who doesn’t play the gentrification game with rich developers won’t last very long in politics.
No, if we want to keep our neighborhoods affordable and livable, we’ll have to take matters into our own hands.
Here are some direct action techniques to fight gentrification:
-MAKE YUPPIES FEEL UNWELCOME
-UNDERMINE PUBLIC SURVEILLANCE
-GRAFFITTI -LITTER -VANDALISM -SQUATTING
-BEFRIEND LOCAL HOMELESS FOLKS
-RENTERS’ UNIONS -COLLECTIVE LIVING
-PROTECT & MAINTAIN NEIGHBORHOOD DIVERSTY
-GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS
-SHOP LOCALLY-OWNED BUSINESSES & BOYCOTT CHAINSTORES
-HOLD GREEDY/UNETHICAL REALTORS, DEVELOPERS, & POLITICIANS PERSONALLY ACCOUNTABLE
VACANT LAND MAKES GREAT COMMUNITY GARDENS &PEOPLE’S PARKS
COOPERATIVE HOUSING
COMMUNITY LAND TRUSTS
RECLAIM THE COMMONS!
