Diverse Coalition Plans Peace Day Festival in Prescott
A diverse group of community groups calling itself the Eat My Shorts Love and Peace Brigade is planning a fun, festive, all day event to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. The free festival will occur on the Prescott Courthouse Square on Saturday, March 24th, and will begin around noon. There will be music, speakers, music, clowns, free massage, street theater, a music jam, and anything participants are willing to create. “Peace Day is a flexible event. While there is a schedule for the main stage, participants are still empowered to participate in the creation of reality rather than giving up control to a central planning committee. If someone wants to set up an ongoing meditation workshop and it’s peaceful, then that’s great! The more the merrier,” says Bob Hipp, an organizer of the event.
A list of demands includes impeachment, bringing the troops home, the breaking of the addiction to militarism (perhaps through a 12 step program), and the creation of a culture of inner and outer peace by changing the fundamental relationships between each other, ourselves, and the Earth. Anyone interested in participating can call or stop by the Catalyst Inshop, 109A N. McCormick street, Prescott. 928 443-8525.
Peace Day Mission Statement:
Because there is an alarming increase of insecurity as a result of our government’s interest in warring for global dominance, we intend to create a fun, festive, and inclusive space for alternatives where the possibility of war no longer exists by:
• encouraging the breaking of chains through individual empowerment and including all in every moment. This festival is created by all of us. In the environment we wish to create, reality is not constructed by a central planning bureaucracy, but instead is participatory.
• taking action in creative ways and encouraging autonomous expression.
• perpetuating an open discussion of the word “peace” and what it means in our daily experience.
• creating a laboratory of healthy social relationships that leaves no room for domination and control.
• fostering an awareness of the deeper connections between a multitude of global and local issues such as war, the environment, everyday social relationships, and coercive economies.
