August 22nd, one year after the murder of Lorenzo Sampablo Cervantes, his family members, friends and people of Oaxaca gathered in the streets to march in his memory.
Lorenzo Sampablo Cervantes was a teacher husband and father of four children. He was dedicated to providing his children with opportunities in their lives. His children have outlived him, as his life was taken from him.
In 2006 he participated in the peoples movement of Oaxaca, marching against the abuses commited by the government.
On August 21st, 2007 he attended a protest, later that night in his home he listened to ¨La ley 710¨ ( a radio station that had been taken by the people of Oaxaca). There was an alert informing listeners that the comrades guarding the radio station may be in danger.Around the middle of the night there was another alert callout for the people, other comrades to come and guard the station. Lorenzo Sampablo Cervantes along with several neighbors began driving to the station in order to warn them of a group of police in buses and motorcycles, before the arrival of the police. They were intercepted by paramilitaries, in the early morning August 22nd, Lorenzo Sampablo Cervantes was shot and killed.
¨We continue on our feet in the struggle, justice will come like have said, time will pass, nothing is eternal and neither is Ulises¨. A quote from a paper passed around with a history of Lorenzo Sampablo Cervantes.
The feature photo is in the zocalo, the destination of the march. Family members and comrades spoke, gathered around this beautiful memorial.
