4) This week's summary of under-reported news

Compiled by Bob Nixon

• Elvira Arellano, an activist who left the protection of Adalberto United Methodist Church to actively campaign for the legalization of immigrants, was arrested recently during a speaking tour in Los Angeles and quickly deported to Tijuana, Mexico.

• A new report by the Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics explains that somebody committing a first-time drug charge for marijuana can face tougher lifetime penalties than violent criminals, such as those convicted of premeditated assault, rape and murder.

• Since its acquisition by the New Times media chain, the high-profile alternative weekly newspaper, LA Weekly, once a beacon of progressive journalism, has dropped reporting on the Iraq war and other global issues, instead favoring hyper-local news coverage and cynical investigative "hit jobs" on the political elite, right and left.
