Prescott Food Not Bombs Calls Bluff by Police
There was a Food Not Bombs meal today at 3:00 on the Courthouse Plaza. The city cops were called to enforce vaguely written park rules about picknicking without a permit. They spent one full hour threatening to make arrests if people did not leave. Everyone stayed. No arrests were made.
The police really have no power in this situation. Some people told them that they were willing to be arrested. Some said that they will also return next Sunday to share food. The police took pictures and seemed pretty frightened when they were calmly informed that some folks were interested in going to jail and speaking with the judge about it.
The county still has not made a final decision on whether sharing food is a sin condemnable by arrest. They might have a decision by Monday. The Security firm, however, is strictly opposed to eating in the park and wishes the cops had the teeth to throw us in jail.
Some people will cook next week at noon at the Catalyst. Others will bring their own food. The meal is at 3:00.
