Radical Environmentalists Oppose Obama's National Fuel Standards for 2016; Claim New Limitations Will Not Do Enough to Curb Global Warming

Washington, D.C.: In response to the National Fuel Standards released by President Obama today, the North American Earth Liberation Front Press Office (NAELFPO) called on the President, members of Congress and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take further significant action to eliminate the harmful emissions caused by passenger vehicles and trucks.

"The 35 miles per gallon standard for passenger vehicles set for 2016 does not go far enough to stop the harmful greenhouse gases that are contributing to global warming," stated Lisa Nesbitt, spokesperson for the NAELFPO. "With polar ice caps melting that will inevitably cause sea levels to rise thereby displacing and threatening the lives of millions globally, the United States has a responsibility to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions from vehicles."

According to the NAELPO, the United States currently rates behind Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada, South Korea, and China in both miles per gallon requirements and greenhouse gas emissions. While the new national standards set the requirement for passenger vehicles at an average of 35 m.p.g. by 2016, that still leaves the U.S. behind Europe, Japan and likely Australia and China. By 2016, European countries project an average standard for passenger vehicles at just under 50 m.p.g., with Japan at 48 m.p.g.

"By only reducing the CO2 emissions from passenger vehicles by a mere 30% during the next six years, the Obama Administration is sending the message to the world that the U.S. is not taking the current environmental crisis seriously," Nesbitt continued. "Obama campaigned on promises of environmental protection, and his Administration has an obligation to become a global leader in environmental policies."

Nesbitt fears that this insignificant increase in fuel economy will lead to further attacks of sabotage on gas-guzzling vehicles. The Earth Liberation Front, an international, radical environmental movement, has been responsible for burning and vandalizing sport utility vehicles and dealerships across the United States during the last decade.

"Global warming is threatening life on earth and the lip service given to environmental protection by the U.S. government will only serve to push more people to take direct action in defense of the planet," stated Nesbitt. "Environmental protection is a matter of self defense and when governments fail to take the necessary steps to protect life on earth, the people must rise up and say no to big industry, government, and their unjust and unhealthy policies."

The North American Earth Liberation Front Press Office is a legal news agency representing the earth liberation movement. The NAELFPO reports on the covert direct actions taken by the Earth Liberation Front in defense of the planet. Targeting deforestation, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), urban sprawl, automobile and industry pollution, and other threats to the natural environment, the Earth Liberation Front uses nonviolent economic sabotage to compel industries and governments to reshape their environmentally destructive policies.
