8/4 Extended Hours! Volunteer Meeting 5pm / Movie Nite: American Outrage 6:30pm
Two grandmothers, Carrie Dann and Mary Dann, have been at the forefront of the Western Shoshone Nation's struggle for land rights and sovereignty for nearly forty years. American Outrage documents their fight against the U.S. government's unlawful attempts to take over traditional Shoshone land in Nevada, part of 60 millions acres guaranteed to them in the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley. Over the years the Dann sisters have endured steady harassment from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and they have squared off against international gold mining corporations and the nuclear industry. Their courage and perseverance in asserting the rights of indigenous peoples have brought them numerous awards, including the 1993 Alternative Nobel Prize and the International Right Livelihood Award.

8/18 Movie Nite: Shelter – A Squatumentary 6:30pm
*Shelter: a Squatumentary* is a documentary film that explores the squatting movement in the East Bay from 2004 to 2007. We follow three examples of the struggle for housing in an unaffordable marketplace such as the San Francisco Bay Area. Hellarity House, Banana House, and Power Machine are stories of squatters who have found one tentative solution to the ongoing housing crisis. Directed by Hannah E. Dobbz, 45 min. (2008)

8/25 Movie Nite: Indigenous Resistance in New Guinea 6:30pm
A compilation of 4 films about indigenous resistance in New Guinea put out by our friends at Solidarity South Pacific. The films are: Freedom for West Papua, which has commentary from a Papuan activist and serves as a good introduction to that border conflict between tribal culture and civilization, The Coconut Revolution, an inspiring film about the incredible resistance the indigenous of Bougainville gave to the world's largest mining company, Hell in the Pacific, which investigates three seperate conflicts between Papuan traditional landowners and predatory industrialism, and First Contact, which documents the 'first contact' between Papuan highlanders and Australian gold prospectors in the 1930s, with original footage and reflections from surviving participants on their swift introduction to Western colonialism. Crucial viewing.
