More than 700 jr. high and high school students spontaneously walked-out of their classes today in response to the passage of HB 2281, with participants from Rincon, Cholla, Tucson and Pueblo high schools, among others. The mass of students marched to TUSD headquarters and proceeded to surround the building and blockade the entrances, to prevent state superintendent Tom Horne from entering for a previously scheduled meeting. Shortly thereafter school district officials canceled their meeting, claiming that Horne, who is running for state Attorney General, had turned it into "a political event".
After learning that the meeting was canceled, several hundred students left TUSD and marched through downtown Tucson to the Arizona state building, where Horne was scheduled to hold a press conference at 2pm. Students rallied all afternoon, with more than a hundred entering the building and others joining as word spread of the occupation. Fifteen were ultimately arrested for refusing to leave.
