Tucson Community Responds to Intensifying Violence in Oaxaca, Mexico
When: Monday, Oct. 30, 4pm
Where: Mexican Consulate Office, 553 S. Stone Avenue (Stone and 17th
Street)
What: Demonstration **Please bring signs and banners.**
Nine individuals have been murdered since October 27, 2006, in Oaxaca, Mexico, including Brad Will, an American journalist with the Global Indymedia Network. For weeks, armed paramilitaries have been attacking the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca, a fusion of striking local teachers and community organizations demanding democracy in Oaxaca. President Fox ordered the federal police to Oaxaca Oct. 28 to "stop the violence," only resulting in increased attacks against the demonstrators. (More information: Global Independent Media Center: http://www.indymedia.org).
The Tucson Coalition for Justice in Oaxaca has these demands:
* End the federal government sponsoredviolence in Oaxaca.

* Oaxaca State Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz's resignation immediately.
* The release of all political prisoners in Oaxaca.
* We support Reporters Without Borders' demand for a full and
complete investigation by Mexican authorities into Oaxaca State
Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz's continued use of plain-clothed municipal
police as a political paramilitary force. The arrest of the assailants
is not enough.
* The Tucson Coalition for Justice in Oaxaca also supports the
call of Zapatista Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos "to compañeros and
compañeras in other countries to unite and to demand justice" for the
dead.
