CP. 23 February 2003. Protesters strip for peace. VANCOUVER -- Some daring antiwar protesters gave passersby an eyeful Sunday when they stripped down to form a naked peace sign with their bodies. Every body type, along with multiple piercings and tattoos were visible as about 50 demonstrators pulled off their clothes and lay down on a hill at Vancouver's downtown Sunset Beach. The group, called Artists Against War, said they were rallying against a possible attack on Iraq. Organizer Conrad Schmidt said he hoped the group's nakedness wouldn't overshadow their earnest message. The Sunday event was not the first time antiwar activists have taken it all off to protest a U.S.-led war against Iraq. Last November, 50 Californian women took off their clothes in the cold rain and spelled the word Peace with their bodies. ******************************************23 February 2003. 250 Australian men strip in anti-war protest. BYRON BAY -- About 250 men took off their clothes Sunday and lay down to spell out the words "Peace Man" on a rugby field to protest the Australian government's strong support for Washington's hardline stance against Iraq. "Men of all shapes and sizes laid down their weapons and overcame fears of exposure to make the protest," co-coordinator Cameron Sparkes-Carroll told Australian Associated Press on Sunday. "We were also making an ironic comment about the small man syndrome that leads to the need for big guns." Sparkes-Carroll said the protesters bared themselves to send the peace message to the Australian government, which has sent 2,000 troops to join U.S. forces preparing for a possible war in the Persian Gulf. The protest follows a similar demonstration two weeks ago when about 750 women shed their clothes in protest on a hillside near the same coastal resort town of Byron Bay,700 kilometers (435 miles) north of Sydney. The women disrobed and lay end-to-end on a grassy knoll to form a heart shape around the words "No War" for an aerial photograph.
